In Mozaik's PAC Closet Library, the ledger board is an edgebanded nailer added to the bottom of a floor-standing unit. Its purpose is to hide the caulk line left by existing baseboard. Phill Anton Consulting turns it on in Job Parameters by enabling the nailer parameter at 4 inches — a width that stays put on any CNC. The same setting also adds a top nailer, which you can leave on for structure or turn off if you fasten with angle brackets or pocket holes instead.
What is a ledger board and why use it?
The ledger board is essentially a nailer that is edgebanded on one side, placed at the bottom of a floor-standing unit. Phill Anton Consulting adds it for one main reason: when a closet goes against a wall that already has baseboard, there is a caulk line where the cabinet meets that baseboard. The ledger board covers up that caulk line so the bottom of the unit looks finished.
It also saves work on site. The boards come pre-cut and edgebanded, ready to install — one less thing the crew has to do. If you would rather not cut them to size, you can cut them lineal and send them to the job site for the installers to chop to length.
How do I turn on the bottom ledger board in Mozaik?
- In the PAC Closet Library, go to Job Parameters (Job Parms).
- Turn on the nailer-width parameter.
- Set it to 4 inches.
- The nailer now shows up on the top and bottom of floor-standing units.
Phill uses 4 inches deliberately: a 4-inch part "stays put" on essentially every CNC machine. If parts that size are shifting on your CNC, that points to a different, fixable machining issue — worth grabbing time with him or asking on the forum.
Note: with the closet library Phill does not necessarily rely on nailers for fastening. He suggests angle brackets, or hiding pocket holes on the fixed shelf or up top that you drill on site and pop into a stud. The bottom nailer is mainly there as the ledger board.
How do I remove the nailer fasteners?
By default the bottom nailer carries fasteners (approximately one inch from the top and one inch from the bottom). You may want to remove them so installers are not confused into thinking they must add wedge fixes and push them into studs.
- Switch to wireframe to see what is going on.
- Go to Fasteners → Joint Templates.
- Find the outrigger nailers partitions template.
- Go to Ends Joint → Bottom Nailer.
- On the entry that was set 1″ from top and 1″ from bottom, click Array (it has no fasteners selected). This clears the fasteners on the bottom nailer.
Alternatively, you can simply leave the fasteners on — that gives you a little more structure.
Do I need edgebanding on the ledger board?
Yes — Phill recommends it. To check or add it:
- Click the section, go to Parts, and look at the nailer. If banding is missing, no edges will show banding.
- Open the banding setup: Other → Banding Template, then pick a banding template.
- In the video Phill uses his PAC closet banding. That template is not importable into your system — you have to create your own (it is simple), or you can copy the Frame list and it will generally work.
After turning banding on, recheck the section's Parts: edgebanding is now applied, and the nailers carry banding on one of the long edges (which long edge does not matter).
How do I turn off the top nailer?
There are three ways, from quickest to most professional:
- On the fly, in the current job: select the unit, go to Parts to Build, and turn off the Top Nailer.
- Permanently, in the library: go to Libraries, open your library, go into Sections, and in every single section go to Parts to Build and turn off the Top Nailer. Then save it back to the library. Use this only if you are sure you will never want a top nailer.
- With a custom parameter (most professional): create a custom parameter that removes the top nailers. Phill covers this in a follow-up video and notes it should be done safely so you do not break other parts.
